rikrit tiravanija

I think the aspects of participation inherent in tiravanija's work are the most compelling. The work that is shown is titled 'Free' and was originally constructed in 1992. In this work Tiravanija emptied out a building in SOHO and refurnished it with a make-shift kitchen in which he served thai curry for free. That was it. That was art. I like that he so easily created an environment in which he was consistently putting to question ideas of art and giving. What does it mean to cook for others. What does it mean to do it in a gallery? Is that somehow different? How? Why food? Why thai food? Why is the food free? I am at once suspicious of any sort of free give away. I don't buy it. What is he getting out of it?
